As the 2019-20 season has moved closer into view, the future of players like Matthijs de Ligt have becoming increasingly more interestingly. Seemingly destined for FC Barcelona, de Ligt was then close to a move to Paris, with Liverpool and Manchester United also heavily linked. However, the move that came to fruition was a move to the Bianconeri in Juventus. Signing for the Turin giants, de Ligt has signed a long-term deal with the club to continue their summer rebirth.
Having fallen short of expectation last year, the club has injected a host of new talent into the side in a bid to create something truly remarkable for the season ahead. In an official club announcement, Juventus said: “Juventus Football Club S.p.A. announces that the agreement with Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax NV for the definitive acquisition of the registration rights of the player Matthijs de Ligt has been reached for a consideration of € 75 million, payable in five financial years, and additional costs of € 10,5 million.
“Juventus and the player have signed a 5-year contract of employment until 30 June 2024.”
Seen as one of the best players in the world, a five-year deal will see the club pick up a tremendous talent and one of the best in the world. At such a young age, too, the youngster has even more growth to come. If he can become a key part of the Juventus backline for years to come, then he could be about to play a part in historic moments for a club chasing long-awaited European success and ten domestic titles in a row.
